I think Stein was generalizing people, and for the most part saying "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence" and always wanting opposite of what they have. There are those few who like being alone, and others who are terrified of being alone. Some are alone by choice, other's had no say in the matter - like childless widows and widowers, the elderly and ill who are confined to hospital or convalescent homes. Knowing Stein's works, I think she understands this complexity with people, but the quote actually is referring to "you can't please everyone."
